The Summer Flower Show displays the greatest plant diversity of any of the Sunken Garden Flower Shows, as well as the longest duration.

‘Our Shared Planet’ is a traveling environmental awareness exhibit featuring the wood-carved birds and animals of award winning wildlife artist Jim Ramsdell. The exhibit contains a number of highly detailed life-size wood sculptures, set against lighted interpretive backdrops, beautiful photographs and quotes along with nature sounds and music, all designed to raise the consciousness and awareness of its visitors. Sections of the exhibit feature endangered species and the fragile ecosystems which they inhabit, stressing the importance of their preservation.

'Our Shared Planet' is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. MORE

At 12:00pm daily and 3:30pm on weekdays the Conservatory gardening staff will give gardener talks about growing techniques, ways to harvest and prepare food from your garden, natural pest control, and creative edible landscape design.

Project Passport is a summer enrichment program designed for elementary-aged visitors to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. Activities are designed to take children on a tour of the world; from the tropical rain forests, to the Arctic, to their own back yard. ‘Our Shared Planet’ is a traveling environmental awareness exhibit featuring the wood-carved birds and animals of award winning wildlife artist Jim Ramsdell. The exhibit contains a number of highly detailed life-size wood sculptures, set against lighted interpretive backdrops, beautiful photographs and quotes along with nature sounds and music, all designed to raise the consciousness and awareness of its visitors. Sections of the exhibit feature endangered species and the fragile ecosystems which they inhabit, stressing the importance of their preservation.

'Our Shared Planet' is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. MORE

Cafesjian's Carousel 100th Birthday Celebration!

A 100th Birthday Party, open to the public, takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 9, at the Cafesjian’s Carousel Pavilion, next to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory in Como Park. From noon to 3 p.m. there will be old-fashioned children’s games, activities, and entertainers including clowns and face painters, along with free mini-cupcakes and root beer floats.

A program at 3 p.m. will include brief comments about the carousel’s remarkable history, and the Minneapolis Aquatennial Senior Singers will lead the crowd in “Happy Birthday.”

Following the program, carousel rides will be free until the 6 p.m. closing. (Rides are the regular price of $2 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.) MORE

Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival

Explore the art, music, food, martial arts and cultural traditions of Japan at the annual Como Park Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival, a family-friendly event, reminiscent of Japan’s annual Obon holiday.

Gates and exhibits open at 3pm, with various performances starting at 3:30.

The day will culminate at dusk with the main event—the lantern lighting. Stone lanterns as well as hundreds of floating paper lanterns throughout the Japanese Garden pond and the Frog Pond will create a vision of peacefulness and harmony.

Admission is $5 per person. Admission for children ages 3-12 and Seniors 65 is $3, and those 2 and under are free.

You can easily avoid the parking challenges by following the signs to the free Como Shuttle.

‘Our Shared Planet’ is a traveling environmental awareness exhibit featuring the wood-carved birds and animals of award winning wildlife artist Jim Ramsdell. The exhibit contains a number of highly detailed life-size wood sculptures, set against lighted interpretive backdrops, beautiful photographs and quotes along with nature sounds and music, all designed to raise the consciousness and awareness of its visitors. Sections of the exhibit feature endangered species and the fragile ecosystems which they inhabit, stressing the importance of their preservation.

'Our Shared Planet' is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. MORE

‘Our Shared Planet’ is a traveling environmental awareness exhibit featuring the wood-carved birds and animals of award winning wildlife artist Jim Ramsdell. The exhibit contains a number of highly detailed life-size wood sculptures, set against lighted interpretive backdrops, beautiful photographs and quotes along with nature sounds and music, all designed to raise the consciousness and awareness of its visitors. Sections of the exhibit feature endangered species and the fragile ecosystems which they inhabit, stressing the importance of their preservation.

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is serving up some scrumptious garden fun for the fourth year in a row in the Chipotle Edible Garden opening Friday, June 13.

Trained staff and volunteers will be onsite 10am – 6pm to answer guests questions. At 12:00pm daily and 3:30pm on weekdays the Conservatory gardening staff will give gardener talks about growing techniques, ways to harvest and prepare food from your garden, natural pest control, and creative edible landscape design.

The Summer Flower Show displays the greatest plant diversity of any of the Sunken Garden Flower Shows, as well as the longest duration.

‘Our Shared Planet’ is a traveling environmental awareness exhibit featuring the wood-carved birds and animals of award winning wildlife artist Jim Ramsdell. The exhibit contains a number of highly detailed life-size wood sculptures, set against lighted interpretive backdrops, beautiful photographs and quotes along with nature sounds and music, all designed to raise the consciousness and awareness of its visitors. Sections of the exhibit feature endangered species and the fragile ecosystems which they inhabit, stressing the importance of their preservation.

'Our Shared Planet' is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. MORE

Sparky will add her famous flare to tales such as: Sparkylocks and the Three Seals, Sparky and the Frog Prince, Sparky and the Bean Stalk, Sparky and the Seven Recyclables, and The Princess and the Fish. These treasured tales will educate guests about ocean life, rainforest adventures, frogs, and much more.
